The song has stuck with me since my youth. My ancestors are all from the British Isles. My father had a phrase when we would pass someone in difficult circumstances, "There, but for the grace of God, go I." When I came across the PTSD vets, and as I passed many "rough sleepers" in my time in London, the song and the phrase would push any other thoughts out of my mind. A couple of twists of fate only a few generations ago is all it would take to put me in their shoes.
